Fresno Flume and Lumber Company's Saw Mill

A maze of flumes radiated out from the Shaver sawmill during the heyday of logging in what is today's Shaver Lake basin. The flumes enabled the firm to move sawn lumber down the step Pine Ridge grade without the expense and delay that went with the old mule drawn freight wagons.

By the spring of 1926, workers were busy clearing the site of the Shaver Lake dam. The old sawmill and millpond, their days numbered as the completion of the new dam neared.

The community of Pine Ridge, located near the site of the original Humphrey's Clipper sawmill, played a major role in the development of eastern Fresno County. Highway 168 follows the old wagon routes, past today's Shaver Ranch, four miles below Shaver Lake.
